PERSONAL TRAINING BLOG
Have you ever had a pain in your backside?
And no I'm not talking about your spouse, kids, boss, or nosy neighbor.
I'm talking about a legit pain in your butt.
One that:
-wakes you up
-hurts to get out of bed
-makes it difficult to get dressed or tie your shoes
-interferes with activity at home, work, and play
Maybe you feel it into your lower back.
Maybe it radiates down the back of your leg a little bit.
Whatever the case, if you currently have or have ever had it, you're not alone.
In my 20+ years of being a physical therapist, I've seen and treated so many people that complained of low back and butt pain.
In fact, I just met with and evaluated a woman the other day.
She came in for her initial Ignite evaluation as she is about to begin our BLAST program.
She pointed out that she's had chronic low back pain and sciatica for years.
After a quick scan, it was apparent that we were dealing with a rotation of her SI Joint.
This is something I see very often that usually presents as low back/butt pain with symptoms of sciatica (radiating pain down the leg).
However, the underlying cause is not stemming from the back, but rather a rotation of the sacroiliac joint. This rotation is usually due to a muscle or muscles being too tight/in spasm and thus pulling the individual out of alignment.
After a few minutes of some specialized muscle activation & relief techniques, we were able to reduce the SI joint rotation and our new member was able to stand up and move with little to no pain. It was a stark difference from when she had walked in.
So if you or someone you know is experiencing similar symptoms, here's a few things you can do to help relieve them:
1. Perform some light soft tissue massage. That can be done with a tool like a ball, stick, foam roll or massage gun. It can also be done with the best tool - a set of highly trained hands 😃.
2. Perform some light active mobility in a pain free range.
3. Work on strengthening any weak muscles that might be contributing to an imbalance.
4. Work on stretching the muscles that are tight and possibly causing the misalignment.
The easiest and surest way to go about this process is to find a skilled physical therapist that is able to help you. If you already have one, great. Make sure you stick close to them and let them guide you.
